Doug Hocking will speak on The Life and Times of Tom Jeffords, Friend of Cochise, at the Prescott Public Library at 5 p.m. on January 5, 2017. Tom Jeffords learned important lessons as a sea captain on the Great Lakes that stood him in good stead when he met Cochise and quickly earned his trust and respect. Tom fearlessly rode alone into Cochise’s camp to make the peace and friendship blossomed through the months that Cochise spent near the Canada Alamosa Reservation. At Cochise’s side when the chief lay dying, the Chiricahua said they would meet again “up there.” Tom went on to more adventures including sinking the wells for Tucson’s first water company, owning the famed Brunckow Mine and a 1/9th share of the Copper Queen. Doug’s biography of Jeffords is due in the spring of 2017 from TwoDot Books.
